Here are the Top 10 entertainment spots, not listed in any order, in our readership area:

1. The Boathouse in Norfolk. Appearances can be deceiving and this little spot behind Harbor Park regularly rocks with national talent.

2. Hampton Coliseum. The shows aren’t as regular as other spots, but when it hosts one, it’s an event.

3. Peppermint Beach Club in Virginia Beach. Yeah, it’s not pretty, but what other venue can host Ice-T one night and saxophonist Maceo Parker a few months later – and fill the place up during both shows.

4. Lewis’ in Norfolk. Small and cozy, but with a healthy dose of experimentalist spirit, not to mention good grub. Local bands can count on the place for a chance to try new material and established musicians find a good audience.

5. Heartbreak Alley in Newport News. It has country on one side for those yearnin’ to two-step and oldies on the other side for people wanting to hear the most danceable music of the rock’n’roll era. Cover is rarely over $5, and there’s plenty of parking.

6. The Nsect Club in Hampton. New on the Peninsula nightlife scene, this alternative/industrial club is getting quite a bit of attention. It’s rumored that two of its windows were broken earlier this year by bass vibrations. Bring your earplugs.

7. Dick’s Clam and Cow in Virginia Beach. Besides having a killer bar, this place has games and toys for everyone. And space!? Bring ALL of your friends. The club hosts a fair share of national bands.

8. David’s in Portsmouth. Hip-hop and R&B; are well represented here, but don’t come in B-boy clothes. The slightly upscale club brings in national talent and the cover is usually a bargain.

9. Mitty’s in the Omni Newport News. A close-by spot for local talent, a decent dance floor and an occasional reggae night. The lights are pretty cool too.

10. Jewish Mother in Virginia Beach. Good food and an blues/rock entertainment schedule for even the most fickle. Favorite performers come back or play two nights.
